CRASH

THE bus crashes happened just 35 minutes and 18km apart. In an unfortunate coincidence, two buses - including one carrying 26 Singaporeans - were involved in two separate accidents in Genting Highlands on Friday, reported New Straits Times.

The 54 passengers in the two buses had a shock of their lives.

Luckily, the worst injury reported was a broken leg suffered by a woman, while others sustained minor injuries.

According to The Star, both buses skidded and crashed along the hill slope.

In the first accident, which happened at about 2.35pm, an express bus carrying 28 passengers hit a hill slope along Gohtong Jaya-Batang Kali road.

China Press reported that the driver is believed to have swerved to avoid a car, while The Star said that he is believed to have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp corner.

The front of the bus was smashed on the driver's side, and the vehicle swerved into the opposite lane before coming to a halt in the middle of the road. A 40-year-old Chinese woman, who was in the seat just behind the driver, broke her leg and was sent to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital.

Several other passengers including the driver and co-driver, suffered minor bruises and cuts. They were sent to the Genting Highlands clinic for treatment.

SHARP CORNER

Just 35 minutes later, a tour bus ferrying 26 Singaporeans crashed into two cars and landed on a van while negotiating a sharp corner at the Genting Highlands-Karak highway.

Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

The bus had been on its way back to Singapore, just in time for the opening of the school term, which starts tomorrow.

The tourists had arrived in Genting Highlands on Wednesday.

They were transferred to another bus before continuing their journey home.

Passenger Woon Yun Nam, 43, said the accident happened within seconds.

"The bus driver started shouting that the vehicle's brakes were not functioning."

A Genting Highlands fire and rescue station spokesman said a fire engine from Genting Highlands and another from Bentong with 21 personnel arrived at the second scene within minutes after receiving a distress call at 3.16pm.
