2 S'pore attractions win Asian awards

Singapore can add another tourism accolade to its name, this time claiming two out of the four honours handed out at the inaugural Asia Attractions Awards.

Sentosa, which attracted some 5.2 million visitors last year, took home the prize in the "Large Attraction" category, while the island's multi-sensory 4D Magix ride emerged top in the "Small Attraction" category.

Sentosa 4D Magix opened its doors only 18 months ago, and is the first and largest theatre in Southeast Asia, built at a cost of $3.5 million.

In the other two categories, the Taj Mahal was crowned the "Grand Winner", while Sunway Lagoon in Malaysia won in the "Medium Attraction" group.

The awards were handed out last Thursday at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Asian Expo at Siam Paragon, Bangkok, Thailand.

A joint collaboration between the IAAPA and satellite TV channel, AXN Asia, the Asia Attraction Awards' is segmented into four categories based on votes and attendance figures.

The "Grand Winner" is the overall winner with most number of votes, the "Large Attractions" for those with a 2 million and above visitor attendance yearly, "Medium Attractions" for those with a 1 to 2 million visitor attendance, and "Small Attractions" for those with a yearly visitor attendance of less than a million.

Winners were determined solely by the public across Asia, who voted online or via SMS.

There were 11 finalists from 5 countries that qualified for the Asian Attractions Awards. The seven others were Ocean Park and Ngong Ping 360 from Hong Kong, TigerLIVE, Jurong Bird Park and Mount Faber from Singapore, Dreamworld from Thailand and Enchanted Kingdom from Philippines.
