Top brands, restaurants to feature in Terminal 3

EXCITING retail and dining offerings are coming up at Changi Airport's Terminal 3 (T3), which opens on Jan 9.

Among the 100 shops and 30 food and beverage outlets is a Ferrari shop - the first in any airport outside Italy - which will sell car accessories, clothing and other Ferrari merchandise.

Luxury cellphone manufacturer Vertu will also open an outlet at T3 - its first in a South-east Asian airport.

Other brands to open there are luxury leather goods label Mulberry, Fifa, Italian lingerie and swimwear retailer La Perla and British casual wear and accessories retailer Fat Face.

Among the food outlets, Hard Rock Cafe and Italian fine dining restaurant Senso will set up shop.

Duty-free retailers will offer mix-it bars at liquor and tobacco outlets, while partitioned-off areas offering facials will be set up at perfume and cosmetics outlets.

Japanese brand SK-II will open its such first beauty cabin in any airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) told The Straits Times T3's retail offerings will join the combined 160 shops and 80 food outlets in terminals 1 and 2.

T3 is Changi's biggest terminal, at 380,000 sq m. T2 ranks second at 358,000 sq m, with T1 coming in at just over 280,000 sq m.

With about five months to go before the grand opening, the new terminal is a flurry of activity.

Just last week, the CAAS awarded its second major contract for duty-free shopping space to incumbent Nuance-Watson.

The highly sought-after licence to sell perfumes and cosmetics attracted multi-million dollar bids from five of the industry's big guns.

The contract, covering the three terminals, is good for three years and comes with an option to renew it for another two.

Nuance-Watson now runs 18 cosmetics and perfume outlets in the airport.

In May, the tobacco and liquor licence was handed to incumbent DFS Group.

Total sales from liquor, tobacco, perfume and cosmetics hit about $450 million last year.

The CAAS is also in the middle of dry runs to minimise glitches ahead of opening day.

A quarter of a million bags have been put through the baggage-processing system and actual trial flights will be done from next month.

Singapore Airlines, the only confirmed T3 tenant so far, will move about half its operations from T2, where it now operates.

Qatar Airways wants to move to the $1.75 billion terminal too, while Korean Air, Lufthansa, United Airlines and All Nippon Airways are still considering the move.

Whichever way they decide, they have until tomorrow to let the CAAS know.

Qatar's Singapore country manager David Ho told The Straits Times: 'We have visited Terminal 3 and we believe the move to a newer facility is in the best interests of our passengers.'

Rental rates at T3 will be about 10 per cent higher than at the two existing terminals, where tenants pay up to $65 per sq m. But carriers which move will enjoy a six-month rent waiver.

When the new facility opens, Changi will be able to handle about 70 million passengers a year.

This puts it ahead of regional airports like Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok and its 45 million passengers, and in step with emerging air hubs like Dubai International Airport, which also plans to cater to 70 million passengers by next year.
