BANGKOK, THAILAND - THAI Airways will raise its fuel surcharges by up to US$90 (S$123) per passenger on international and domestic flights because of surging global oil prices, the airline said Wednesday.

The increase will take effect from June 25, the flag carrier said in a statement, 'due to the increase in jet fuel cost in the world market that has increased on a regular basis.'

International passengers will have to pay surcharges based on the flight distance, ranging from 60 dollars for short hops to 230 dollars for long-haul flights - up from the current surcharges of between 45 and 140 dollars.

The surcharge on domestic flights will be 850 baht (S$35), an increase on the current fee of 750 baht.

Thai Airways has already raised its fuel surcharges this year, imposing increases of between 20 and 35 dollars at the end of April.

In a bid to deal with soaring fuel costs, the carrier also announced last week that was suspending its flights between Bangkok and New York.

Thai Airways is controlled by the Thai government, which holds a 54.21 per cent stake. -- AFP
