Are long-distance buses safe?

MANY motor accidents, especially those involving long-distance express buses, have occurred on Malaysia's highways.

The questions on the minds of Singaporeans who make frequent trips to Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Penang by Malaysian-owned express buses are:

How safe is it to travel in these buses?

Are they covered by insurance if the buses they travel in are involved in an accident?

Another question is whether they should take up additional insurance coverage on their own, since the one from the bus operators is usually minimal and, perhaps, inadequate.

Other concerns involve things like whether there are any guidelines issued by a reliable organisation or government
body with regard to safety standards, as well as whether these standards are complied with.

For instance, how do passengers know that the buses they travel in are maintained properly and that the drivers are not stressed due to work fatigue or other pressing factors?

It would be helpful if bus operators or tour agencies could shed some light on these concerns.
