Guide to US VWP eligibility for S'poreans
>I WOULD like to thank Mr Teo Hui Kian for his family's interest in travelling to the United States and his letter "Confusion over biometric passport for travel to US" (my paper, July 2).

Singaporean citizens are eligible to travel to the US on the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). The passport requirements for participation in the VWP have changed over the past few years.

The table above provides details which will be useful to any prospective VWP traveller in determining if his/her passport meets the current requirements.

Mr Teo indicated that his daughter's passport was issued in late April 2006. As her passport was issued between Oct 27, 2005, and Oct 25, 2006, the VWP requires the passport to be machine-readable and have a digital photo on the ID page.

From the description in Mr Teo's letter, his daughter's passport appears to be compliant with the above and she would not need a biometric passport.

The biometric passport requirement applies only to travellers whose passports were issued, amended or extended on
or after Oct 26, 2006.

I appreciate this opportunity to provide an informative response to Mr Teo and other my paper readers.

Ms Mary R. Avery
First Secretary and Consul Embassy of the United States of America, Singapore
