PENANG, MALAYSIA: Heavy rain at the Penang International Airport yesterday morning forced a Malaysia Airlines flight to be rerouted to the Langkawi Airport.

Kuala Lumpur-Penang flight MH1138, which was supposed to land at 10.05am, was instructed to land in Langkawi as the airport had to be closed due to the bad weather.

A crew member, who wanted to be known only as Shakil, told a Bernama reporter onboard that the diversion was unavoidable.

The passengers were informed that they had to wait till noon to resume their flight to Penang.

Flight MH1138 took off from the KL International Airport at 9.15am.

A Malaysia Airports operations unit spokesman, said the aircraft landed in Penang at about 11.50am and returned to KLIA at 12.47pm.

He said only one flight was affected.
