KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The puzzle has been solved. Now it is clear why the area where the former tourist information centre near the Majestic Hotel has been cordoned off (Streets yesterday).

Property developer YTL is planning to construct a 15-storey 330-room hotel, a three-level podium and another three-level basement car park, said City Hall.

"YTL owns a 1.322ha plot where the Majestic Hotel now sits and the adjacent plot where the proposed new development will take place," said City Hall director of town planning Mahadi Che Ngah.

The proposed project also includes the restoration of the 2nd, 4th and 5th floor of the Majestic Hotel.

The development order was given on January 2008 but the building plans have not been approved.

The project notice board will be erected once the building plans has been approved.

"The project is expected to be completed 21/2 years after the building plans has been approved," he said.

YTL has been ordered by the National Heritage department to preserve, maintain and protect the Majestic Hotel and its surroundings before any restoration takes place, Mahadi said.

"However any restoration can only start when the building plans has been approved," he said.

The approval will take into consideration the restoration of Majestic Hotel and its surroundings.

YTL has also been ordered to cordon the area to block the appearance of the abandoned look of the heritage building.
