An Australian outback holiday for two elderly couples has ended in tragedy, with one of the group members, a Singapore woman, dead.

Their rented Toyota Camry rammed into a tree in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park on July 13, killing the 66-year-old woman and injuring her husband, 69, her brother-in-law, 75, and his wife, 68.

The men were slightly injured, but the other woman has rib and spinal injuries. She is understood to be in a stable
condition at the Royal Darwin Hospital in Darwin, and is expected to be transferred to a hospital here soon.

The car is believed to have crossed over to the right side of the road and then veered sharply back to the left before hitting the tree. It is unclear who was at the wheel then.

It is not known if the dead woman's body has been flown back.
