Hat-trick for AirAsia
>By Victoria Barker

FOR the third year running, budget carrier AirAsia has been voted the best budget airline in Asia.

In an annual poll conducted by online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia, the Malaysian airline garnered 30 per cent of the total votes, beating Jetstar Asia, which came in second, by 18 per cent.

AirAsia has topped the list every year since the category was introduced in 2006. Last year, it amassed 22 per cent of the votes.

Also on the list was Thailand's Nok Air, Singapore-based Tiger Airways and the Philippines' Cebu Pacific.

The survey ranks the best travel brands in Asia - with categories such as Best Holiday Destination, Best Airports and Best Business Hotels.

Almost 5,000 frequent travellers - who took an average of 15 trips over the past year - voted for their favourite budget airline through the website from May to July this year.

The poll is "a broad measure of the newer airlines' ability to deliver not just low prices...but also reliable schedules, decent service and the occasional smile," the Smart Travel Asia website said.

Route network and access also play a major role. AirAsia has an extensive route network in Asia, covering more than 102 routes and 12 countries.

The carrier placed first despite the introduction of baggage-handling fees in April.

Just last month, it was reported that the company's net profits plummeted by 95 per cent in the second quarter of this year, compared to a year ago, due to high fuel costs and foreign-exchange losses.

But the airline will soldier on.

Said Datuk Sri Tony Fernandes, the chief executive officer of the AirAsia group: "The title reflects on our commitment in providing guests with the best services.

"We strive hard to ensure our guests derive utmost satisfaction when flying AirAsia."
