GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - A treasure hunt with a difference is set to take place in the inner city area here on Nov 2.

The Skal International Penang World Heritage Treasure Hunt 2008 will bring participants to various heritage sites as they search for clues.

But instead of travelling in cars, participants will be in trishaws during the two-hour hunt which will be flagged off from the Khoo Kongsi.

State Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Law Heng Kiang launched the treasure hunt at the Traders Hotel here yesterday.

Skal International Penang president Eddy Low said the event was aimed at educating the public and tourists about heritage sites here.

He said it was necessary to educate and remind the public and tourists of the state's heritage attractions following the listing of George Town and Malacca on Unesco's World Heritage List in July this year.

"Using trishaws in the treasure hunt is appropriate as they are Penang's living heritage icon," Low said, adding that about 40 to 60 trishaws were expected to be involved in the hunt.

He invited corporations such as hotels and tour companies to take part in the treasure hunt by sponsoring a trishaw at RM388 each.

Sponsors are entitled to select one or two individuals, whether locals or tourists, to take part in the treasure hunt.

Law said a group of tourists from Australia, planning to come here in November, had put in a request for 100 trishaws to take them on the heritage trail.
