Close to 2,000 Singapore-bound travellers trapped

More than 14 flights to Singapore from Bangkok were cancelled, stranding close to 2,000 travellers, most of whom were Singaporeans.

The flights cancelled include two flights from Jetstar Asia, three from Tiger Airways, four from AirAsia and five from Singapore Airlines (SIA).

Jetstar Asia told Lianhe Wanbao that the 360 seats on the two Singapore-bound flights were both fully booked, and the passengers should still be at the besieged Bangkok airport.

The Straits Times reported that scores of travellers also turned up at Changi Airport early on Wednesday morning and found that their flights to Bangkok had been cancelled.

At about 6am, a long queue formed behind two counters in Terminal 1 after Jetstar Asia's cancelled flight 3K511 to Bangkok. The travellers were seeking alternative travel arrangements or refunds.

Many of them said they were not aware that Jetstar Asia had suspended their flight and only found out when they reached the airport.

"We tried to informed passengers when we learnt about the airport closure last night, but about half of them still appeared at Changi Airport today. We had to explain the situation to them at the airport." Jetstar told Wanbao.

An SIA spokesman said that more than 1,000 passengers were meant to return on the five flights from Bangkok that were cancelled today.

For Tiger Airways, their three flights with a capacity of 540 were still in Bangkok awaiting further developments.

Their cancelled flights to Bangkok from Singapore also resulted in the same number of passengers not being able to fly to Thailand.

68-year-old retiree Mr Ong and his wife were supposed to take the 7.10am flight on Tiger Airways to Bangkok on Wednesday morning. The flight was postponed to 12.45pm, then cancelled altogether.

"I called Tiger about 30 times, but the phone lines were busy. I wish they had informed me before I came down to the airport," he told Wanbao.

In total, it is estimated that 78 flights were affected by the protest and more than 6,000 travellers from all over the world were stranded at the Suvarnabhumi Airport, a major Southeast Asian hub for millions of passengers.

The airport ceased operation at 10pm Singapore time last night.
