Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) president Dr Choong Sim Poey said different people had different views on how history should be written.

He said history should not only be confined to the good part but also to the negative part as well.

Dr Choong said the PHT had done research before putting up the information board.

He said all the trust wanted to do was present the alternative names of roads to the public.

For instance, Lebuh Campbell was also known back in the olden days as Jalan Nona Baru (streets of new maidens), Jalan Macau (street of people from Macau); sin kay (new street) and sin toa mui lau (new big arch of house stretching between Campbell and Chulia) in Hokkien, san kai (new street), san tai mun lau (new big arch), fa kai (flower street which was a refined term for prostitutes) and kam le tai kai (big street Campbell, used for marriages, funerals and processions) in Cantonese.
