MUAR: Ten people, including a nine-year-old girl, were killed when the express bus they were in skidded and crashed into a tree at Km146.5 of the North-South Expressway near Tangkak.
They were among 26 passengers and two drivers heading to Johor Baru and Singapore from Perak during the 2am mishap on Sunday.
Seven died at the scene while the others succumbed to their injuries at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital here.
Police have identified nine of the victims as Foo Pei Sin, 21, Khor Mooi Hui, 49, Ng Ah Hua, 40, Ho Lee Lee, 42, Chan Jia Yit, nine, Ng Siew Woon, 12, Fuh Mooi Lang, 57, her daughter Goh Pei Sin, 21, and Ho Chung Shing, 26.
Ho was a Hong Kong national who had a Singapore permanent resident status.
Eighteen others, including the two bus drivers, were rushed to the hospital. Some were given out-patient treatment
According to a passenger Goh Sie Kiat, 31, who was going to Singapore to work, the roof of the bus was ripped off by the impact.
He said he managed to pull a 12-year-old boy, who had leg injuries, out of the wreckage.
Muar police chief ACP Mohammed Nasir Ramli said initial investigations showed the bus driver lost control of the bus before it crashed and overturned.
He urged eye-witnesses to contact the Muar police to assist in the investigations.
Fuh's husband Goh Seng Ren, from Taman Seri Putri in Johor Baru, said he rushed to the hospital after being informed at about 3am.
He said his wife and daughter had gone to Perak to attend a relative's wedding.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said an investigation would be carried out and if negligence was found to be the cause of the accident, stern action would be taken against those responsible.
In Johor Baru, Plus Expressway Berhad corporate communication general manager Khalilah Datuk Mohd Talha said it was the first time a major accident had occurred at that location.
"We have sent a technical team to the site to identify the cause of the accident," she said.
Change drivers' attitude, public transport firms urged
PETALING JAYA: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye urged all public transport operators to change their employees' driving attitude to ensure the safety of their passengers.
He said that the operators needed to adopt a proactive approach to help prevent fatalities on the road.
"The latest tragedy where 10 passengers were killed in a bus accident near Tangkak, Johor has clearly shattered the community's confidence in public transport safety," he said in a statement Monday.
Lee said the accident will not be the last until everyone was committed to a culture which placed road safety as a priority.
He urged public transport companies to ensure that drivers with bad records were not allowed behind the wheel to reach the national road safety target of reducing road fatalities by 40% within the next five years.
"The companies could also conduct background checks on prospective drivers before they are hired and ensure that the drivers comply with speed limits on roads," Lee added.
Meanwhile, police said they have identified the remaining two victims who perished during the involving a Super Nice Grassland Express bus at KM146.5 of the North-South Expressway near Tangkak at 2am Sunday.
Muar Police Chief ASP Mohammad Nasir Ramli told Bernama the two remaining victims (both men) were Choo Soo Heong, 46, from Setiawan and Leong Kok Wai, 30, from Teluk Intan, Perak.
He said the remains of both Choo and Leong was claimed by their family members on Monday while family members had claimed the remains of eight others who also died during the tragic accident.
