>BEIJING, CHINA - Direct daily flights between China and Taiwan began on Monday, official media announced, one of the most visible steps to mark rapidly improving relations between the island and the mainland this year.

The first flight departed the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen for Taiwan at 7:20 am (1120 GMT), with another one taking off from Shanghai 40 minutes later, the Xinhua news agency reported.
