2 from S'pore in running for "The Best Job in the World"

TWO FROM Singapore out of 34,000 hopefuls from around the world have proven their mettle.

Teacher Greg Reynen and Jimmy Wong, a free diver and photographer, are among the top 50 candidates shortlisted by Tourism Queensland (TQ) for "The Best Job in the World".

The sole position they vie for? A six-month, A$150,000 island caretaker post on the Great Barrier Reef where the chosen individual will get to snorkel, bush walk, sail, and interact with locals, then tell the rest of the world via photos, videos and a blog.

For the first stage of TQ's worldwide campaign, applicants had to create a 60 second or less video in English, explaining why they were the best person for the job.

So what exactly did our candidates from Singapore do to get into the top 50?

Greg Reynen, from the Singapore American School, sent a video that showed him meandering around Singapore in a diving oufit, complete with scuba mask and yellow flippers, jostling with giggly locals on the MRT train.

Jimmy Wong, trying a different tack, earnestly declared at the end of his video, "Please help this free-spirited, fun-loving, adventurous little fish experience the magic of the Great Barrier Reef, and live his dreams"

Greg and Jimmy, who received Tourism Queensland's announcement on Tuesday, will now go through a second round of selection by TQ and its representatives in international markets along with media partners.

From there, 10 candidates will be chosen for the final interview event, plus one Wild Card candidate who accumulates the most number of online votes.

Those looking to increase Greg's or Jimmy's Wild Card chances can log onto www.islandreefjob.com to vote for them.
