Getting your Nonya 'fix' in S'pore

You don't necessarily have to travel to Malacca to experience Nonya culture and food.

Even though many Singaporeans are making their way to Malaysia to satisfy their Nonya 'fever' - hot on the heels of the successful local TV series "The Little Nonya" - there's good food and culture to experience in our very own backyard.

my paper highlights four places where you can sample the Peranakan cuisine, gaze at artefacts and buy a traditional outfit.

SINGAPORE'S NONYA VIBE

Abby Collections
Where:
Kiosk at Hougang Mall, level 2 (tel: 9866-1765)
What to expect: Beautifully crafted kebayas with intricate designs can be found here. Prices range from $60 to $300 a piece, depending on the design and material used. After this Saturday, the kiosk will move to the first level of the mall.

Kim Choo Kueh Chang
Where:
109/111, East Coast Road (tel: 6440-5590)
What to expect: Specialising in sweet zhang (rice dumplings), this restaurant serves up traditional Nonya cuisine like babi pongteh (stewed pork with preserved soya beans). Also learn to wrap Nonya zhang at a cooking class.

Katong Antique House
Where:
208, East Coast Road (tel: 6345-8544)
What to expect: The 25-year-old museum-shop houses a collection of owner Peter Wee's family heirlooms. Don't miss a pair of 70-year old rhinestone shoes, which were worn by Mr Wee's grandfather during his wedding.

The Peranakan Museum
Where:
39, Armenian Street (tel: 6332-7591)
What to expect: The three storey museum houses a comprehensive collection of Peranakan artefacts in 10 galleries. Check out the largest Peranakan beadwork tablecloth, which has a million beads
