Even though Indonesia has a large Muslim population, 90 per cent of the population in Bali is Hindu.

Presently there are only three hotels there serving certified halal food. Two of these are the Diwangkara Holiday Villa Beach Resort in Sanur and the Wina Holiday Villa in Kuta. The other is a local hotel at Nusa Dua.

"Both Holiday Villa hotels were issued halal certificates by the Majlis Ulama Indonesia in Bali," said Hosni Muit (picture), general manager of both hotels.

"The chef at Lagenda Food Garden and myself are Muslims and officials from the Majlis Ulama Indonesia here in Bali make periodic checks to ensure strict adherence to halal standards," said Hosni.

"Our most popular dishes are mamak fried mee, fried rice kampung style and roti jala. We also have requests for take-aways, especially for lunch. We are providing this service to ease visitors' anxiety on where to get halal food."
