THE shop offers a feast for the eyes, and for children - their greatest "treat"."
Adults with sweet tooth will find the Candy Bank simply tantalising.
Walking into the KSR Candy Bank in the sleepy town of Jenjarom, near Kuala Langat in Selangor, you'd think that such shops, colourfully decorated with helium balloons, multi-coloured candies and chocolates and other eye-catching decorations, only exist at airport terminals and swanky malls.
Instead of looking like a sore thumb in the drabby looking town, Candy Bank adds colour and bring smiles to passers-by and customers.
Jenjarom has its fair share of big and small "makan" shops, furniture outlets, textile go-downs and wooden bah-kut teh shops, and the one and only candy shop makes a nice addition.
This is especially so because the town attracts hundreds of visitors every weekend to its world-famous Fo Guang Shan Dong Zhen temple which is just a stone's throw away from the shop.
And many heading to the temple or on their return journey from the place of worship do stop by at the shop to buy chocolates, candies, cotton candy, popcorns, locally produced tidbits, ice blended drinks, smoothies and other sweets.
Curious Jenjarom residents who initially didn't know what to make of the shop are not only shopping there now but are also placing their orders for gifts. The Malay customers also buy the sweets to make "hantaran" (gifts for engagement and wedding).
Love-struck school students also make a beeline at the shop to buy chocolate roses, which cost as little as RM10 for their boyfriends and girlfriends.
The family-run business was initially a provision shop and the noise and pollution caused by the heavy traffic on the main road in front of the shop had the owners looking for another business to do.
They decided to open a candy shop after much thinking and planning, and noticing that the town did not have such a shop.
They renovated their shop, did it up tastefully and had it air-conditioned. And they went out of their way to look for good chocolates, candies and various other types of sweets from several Western countries and Japan as well as from local makers, too. The result? A well-stocked candy shop that has become the talk of the town.
