A room to warm your wired heart

WHEN you're a business traveller whose laptop is more of a roommate than a work accessory, then connectivity - and the ease of it - is likely to be one of the things you look out for in a hotel. And if your idea of happiness is the ability to a) have Internet access in your room and b) actually be able to find the connection and get it to work on the first attempt, then the JW Marriott in Bangkok offers you a room to warm your wired heart.

It's the first Marriott hotel in Asia - and arguably the first hotel in the region - to offer hi-tech rooms with new technology that allows easy connection for all your gadgets, be it laptop, iPod, digital camera or Playstation. Best of all, your gadgets can be connected via 'plug and play' to the room's 32 inch LCD TV sets.

Called the Remote Jack Pack technology developed by Clipsal, the cool new set up means you can connect your laptop to the TV and work while watching the latest news or in-demand movie on a split screen. Alternatively, you can plug in your iPod and listen to music through the TV's speakers, or look through your stockpile of photos on a large screen by plugging in your digital camera.

Even if you only want to charge your mobile phone, you don't have to dig around your suitcase for your adaptor plug. It's right there next to the panel of USB, audio and video cable outlets. So it's literally just plug and charge.

There is even an inhouse 'help desk' - aptly called the IT concierge where you know the staff will not be rude and unhelpful - instead, the IT-savvy staff will help you sort through your connectivity pouch, which contains all the cables and gizmos you need, and make even the IT-incompetent guest feel perfectly at ease.

Of course, in the event that you feel compelled to leave the room for some really important matter, like a meal, check out the hotel's outlets. For a casual bite, the quirkily-named Bangkok Baking Company - has an excellent range of breads and sandwiches that you wish Singapore had as well.
