Markets, bars and restaurants galore make Phuket's Patong Beach the island's liveliest stretch of sand. But the surrounding area is also famous for a good cluster of comfortable, well-designed hotels. The Mercure Patong is located far enough inland to have escaped the destructive force of the 2004 tsunami, but that means a 20-minute walk to the beach - too far for many guests.
To compensate, the Mercure has created its own aquatic paradise; the resort's four buildings surround a deep blue pool, enticing enough for a dip that can last the whole day. The pool stays shaded from dawn to dusk, so those who want to work on their tan head to the rooftop mini-pool.
Besides its tempting waters, holidaymakers should find the hotel's mix of contemporary design, compact size and full range of facilities an inviting prospect. There are 249 rooms - 235 Superior, 10 Family and four Deluxe Suites. Each Superior room features Thai contemporary design and a view over the pool. Fine for either individuals or couples, the rooms come furnished with a 20-inch satellite TV and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Step on to the private balcony, squint your eyes, and you could be on the Andaman!
If "regular" isn't for you, super-size your stay with one of the Deluxe Suites. They're big enough for a family of six to lodge in. And for families with small children, the Mercure has 10 Family units with kids' beds and no balcony - for safety reasons.
All rooms are functional, comfortable and peaceful. Just don't forget to pull the shades if you want privacy - the pool view works both ways.
Other attractions at the Mercure include its single restaurant, World Cafe, serving international cuisine alongside tasty Thai and southern Thai dishes; the O2 Lounge Bar, which features live music every night 'til late; and the Venus Spa. There's also a fitness centre, meeting rooms and a children's playroom full of toys and games. The small roof-deck pool is a good, safe space for kids, too.
Mercure Patong has pretty much everything for everyone. Lacking a beachside location, it tries extra-hard with its facilities and service, making for a truly pleasant stay despite the absence of sand under your soles. If your holidays revolve around good food, bar hopping, shopping and chilling in comfortable surroundings with your loved ones, then Mercure Patong is a great option. But die-hard sand-baskers and water-sport freaks might want to put this place at the bottom of their list.
