Wa Wa... what a splashing time!

By Zalina Mohd Som

A 60-minute ride is all it takes to see everything (or almost everything) at the vast Mines Resort City both by land and on water without the hassle of changing crafts.

Hop onto its latest attraction, the Wa Wa Splash Tour which goes through a scenic golf course and a vast lake.

Malaysia's first amphibious bus is not just transport; rather it is an adventure drive that allows visitors to experience this one-of-a-kind way to see the resort city in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

DUKW Wa Wa

The Wa Wa Amphibious Bus is a modification of a World War II military landing craft (also known as DUKW) that was used to transport soldiers and goods across land and river.

The DUKW is widely used in many countries to promote river and land cruises. Reflecting the vehicle's amphibious nature, most of these tours are called Duck Tours.

The USA offers Duck Tours in cities like Boston, Miami, Seattle and San Francisco to name a few. Duck tours are also available in London, Singapore and Australia.

And it's here in Malaysia, for the first time. Wa Wa Splash Tour's mascot is a frog - an indicator of all sorts of environmental problems, including global warming. A certain percentage of ticket sales will be donated to amphibian conservation foundation Save Our Frog.

Splashing Time

Spanning the immense grounds of Mines Resort City and linked by road and water are its very own seven wonders - Palace Of Golden Horses, Mines Resort & Golf Club, Palace Beach & Spa, Mines Shopping Fair, Mines Wonderland, Mines Waterfront Business Park and Mines International Exhibition & Conventional Centre.

Interestingly, all these were built on what was once the world's largest open cast tin mine covering 150 acres, with a depth of at least 200m.

Besides the awe-inspiring architecture, the most interesting part of the tour is when the 48-seater Wa Wa Amphibious Bus goes past posh bungalows at the Mines Resort & Golf Club.

The friendly tour guide will then announce the names of the owners of some of these stately homes, much to the delight of the passengers.

When the bus hits the water or hops on the land, passengers experience a sense of thrill and excitement.

Wa Wa Splash Tour makes six trips daily from 10am to 6pm. Tickets are priced at RM45 and RM30 (child) while families can enjoy Family Package at RM99 for two adults and one child.
