Irish pubs and grub

ASK Dublin-born Declan O'Donnell what the best thing about being Irish is, and he says with a grin: "Traditional music, I love Guinness, I love U2."

He adds: "I like to be Irish because when you go around the world, people will just go Oh, you're Irish. No one has anything against the Irish.

Dublin, the capital of Ireland, has a population of about 1.7 million people.

It has many pubs and its friendly people ensure that the party lasts all night long.

Mr O'Donnell, 39, moved to Singapore in 1998. He is the customer service manager of Gaelic Inns which runs nightspots like Muddy Murphy's Irish Pub, Ballymoon's Spirits Bar and Durty Nelly's Irish Pub.

He is single, with a nine-year-old daughter.

Here are his six suggestions to having a good time in Dublin.

1. Have a wonderful Irish meal at Johnny Fox pub in the Dublin Mountains

It serves excellent Irish seafood and from July to October, you can experience both a cabaret and dinner.

Expect the cabaret to be a little like Riverdance.

Typical Irish cuisine includes fresh mussels and oysters, bacon and cabbage, fish and chips, and says Mr O'Donnell, anything with potatoes.

2. Visit St James Gate Guinness Brewery

You cannot visit Dublin without finding out more about the history of Guinness.

Learn more about Arthur Guinness, the man behind Guinness Stout. You can either take a tour or explore the brewery alone. Entrance fee is about $28.

3. Mingle with Dubliners at Flannery's Bar

Located at 6 Lower Camden Street, it is an excellent late-night venue if you like to dance. The music goes on all night and traditional Irish food is served all day.

A good meal for two people, including a few pints of beer, should cost about $100.

He says: "Pubbing is in our culture. Its where you have a beer with your Dad, then walk home together."

4. Shop at Grafton Street

This is the Dublin equivalent of Orchard Road. Check out Brown Thomas, a department store which is like Takashimaya.

When you get tired, just hang out on this street and watch the many buskers performing here.

5. Club at The Pod

The Pod is a nightclub in an old railway station. It is one of Dublin's best known clubs and is popular among the young and the fashionable. The Pod is located at Old Railway Station, Harcourt Street.

6. Visit Dublin during the summer

The best time to visit Dublin is from July to September when the weather is at its finest.

If you time your visit well, you can enjoy the Fleadh Ceol festival. It is a traditional Irish music festival where the Irish play instruments like the banjo and fiddle.

This year, the event will be held in Tullamore, County Offaly, from Aug 19 to 26. Tullamore is about 80km east of Dublin.

You can get there by train, which departs about every hour. Contact the train station on (353-0) 506-21431 for more information.
