A woman in Wenzhou city, Zhejiang, China, suffered second-degree burns during an exorcism to rid her of the “toad spirit”, reported China Press.
The 69-year-old woman, known as Cai, had sought help from a man named Chen, who claimed to be an exorcist, and his female disciple, Ye.
Ye claimed to have heard weird noises coming from Cai’s throat whenever she spoke and told her that she must be possessed by the “toad spirit”.
During the exorcism, both Chen and Ye lit paper effigies and told Cai to stand near the blazing pile, claiming that the heat would expel the spirit.
When Cai suffered burns on her hands, legs and stomach, Ye only gave her some “magic pills” made from incense and advised her not to go to the hospital.
However, she passed out from high fever and had to be hospitalised. She later lodged a police report.
