KOTA BARU - The Gua Musang syariah court let off the man who married an 11-year-old girl with a mere RM1,800 (S$608) fine.

Judge Mohd Surbaineey Hussain imposed the fine after the 41-year-old accused pleaded guilty to marrying a minor without prior consent from the syariah court and for engaging in polygamy without permission from his spouse.

Each of the offences under the Muslim Family Enactment 2002 carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 and two months' jail.

However, the accused, who was not represented, had earlier appealed not to be sent to jail.

The man, who has two other wives aged 41 and 34, paid the fine later yesterday.

His marriage to the child bride in Narathiwat, Thailand, on June 18 went viral last weekend when his second wife vented her frustration over social media.

The man had refused to give in to public pressure to have the marriage annulled.
