The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has encouraged all Singaporeans visiting Myanmar to register on the ministry's website at www.mfa.gov.sg.

An MFA spokesperson said in a TV news report that this will enable MFA and the Singapore Embassy in Yangon to contact Singaporeans to render necessary assistance.

He further added that Singaporeans who intend to travel to Myanmar should pay close attention to the developments there.

"They should take the necessary precautions for their personal safety, including remaining in a safe location and avoiding areas where there may be trouble," said the spokesman.

"MFA and our Embassy in Yangon continue to monitor the situation in Myanmar very closely."

Currently, security forces are using tear gas to disperse monks who are attempting to enter Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda as part of their mass demonstration for democracy.

Authorities have also imposed a night-time curfew and a ban on public gatherings.
