With its rugged mountains and lush forest, Kanchanaburi is a great place to escape the stress of the city. And there are few places better than River Kwai Jungle Rafts, where you can relax while savouring nature at its very best.

Getting there is half the fun. A 20-minute boat ride upriver takes you deep into the jungle to the floating lodge, which was established more than 30 years ago, and has successful resisted change.

The rooms are comfortable, with double bed, ensuite toilet and shower and a private balcony at the back overlooking the Mon village. There are no TVs or aircons and lighting comes courtesy of gas lamps.

The middle raft serves as lobby and restaurant cum bar. Accommodating up to 100 guests at a time, dinner here is a romantic experience and is best followed by a visit to the Mon theatre to watch the graceful dancers.

Wake to the sound of elephants enjoying a morning bath, then fill day with a visit to nearby Lawa Cave, fishing and canoeing, or just chill on the porch. Foot and body massage is also available.
