It's a dream come true for dog lovers with the itch to travel. Last Friday (Jan 27), some happy pooches in Japan got to fly high with their humans on a Japan Airlines' (JAL) special chartered flight.

The 'Wan Wan Jet Tour' chartered flight was launched as part of a three-day domestic tour in Japan for pet owners. For a total cost of ¥150,000 (S$1,876), the package includes accommodation and meals at pet-friendly establishments and sightseeing in rented cars.

For this special flight, the dogs got to sit with their owners in the main cabin on their flight from Narita Airport and to Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan.

In regular flights, pets are often confined to crates in the cargo area.

For this special flight, two veterinarians were on board to help out in cases of contingencies.

According to JAL, the flight included dog treats, a boarding certificate and complimentary crate training before departure.

Dog owners have reason to be excited now, because JAL added that it might consider introducing more of such flights in the future if there is interest.

This is not the first time a Japanese airline has launched this pet-friendly initiative.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) used to allow pets on board the main cabin but ended the service in 2005 following complaints from passengers.

Last year, ANA also ran a chartered flight for dog owners as part of a package tour to Hokkaido. According to Japan Times, tickets for that tour were sold out within two days.
